Piemonte

Located in the Northwest at the foot of the Alps and surrounded on three sides by mountains, causing Autumn fogs ‘Nebbia’, which causes slow ripening grapes. Nebbiolo produces the region’s iconic grapes for Barolo and Barbaresco, powerful and able to age for decades. The Barbera grape yields juicy fruit and soft tannins, making it versatile. Dolcetto offer early drinking wine with dark fruit flavours. Piemonte is known for its distinctive whites from the dry Arneis, Timorasso and Gavi from the Cortese grape near the Ligurian border. It is a major producer of sweet sparkling Moscato d’Asti. Winemaking in Piemonte emphasises long macerations, extended ageing in large oak casks, deeply rooted in heritage, making it a benchmark of fine wine in the world.
